Diesel Truck Myth Busting – Fact vs. Fiction

If you’re considering buying a diesel truck, you’ve likely encountered a range of opinions—some claiming that diesel trucks are excessively loud or costly to purchase and maintain. With so many mixed messages, it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction. So, how much of what you’ve heard is grounded in truth, and how much is based on outdated myths or misconceptions?

Pump Down the Volume

Diesel-powered vehicles are often recognized by their distinct sound, leading to a common perception that they are excessively loud. However, the difference in noise levels between diesel and gasoline engines is less dramatic than commonly believed.

Scientific measurements indicate that a diesel engine operating at full throttle produces approximately 100 decibels, while a gasoline engine under the same conditions reaches around 88 decibels. Although diesel engines are louder, the difference is relatively modest and does not justify the notion that diesel vehicles are unbearably noisy.

I Can’t Find Fuel

There are over 145,000 fueling stations across the United States, and contrary to popular belief, diesel fuel is available at the majority of them. While it may sometimes seem as though only a small number of stations offer diesel, the reality is quite different. Approximately 98% of all fueling stations in the U.S. provide diesel at the pump.

Where’s the Power?

The perception that diesel pickup truck engines lack power may stem from the popularity of high-performance sports cars—such as Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Porsches—which run on gasoline. However, diesel engines are known for delivering significantly greater torque and pulling power, making them ideal for heavy-duty tasks. Diesel fuel contains approximately 11% more energy per gallon than gasoline, contributing to the enhanced performance and efficiency of diesel-powered trucks.

Who Can Keep Up with the Maintenance?

It is true that filters and oil changes will run you a bit more with a diesel engine than they will with gas, but diesels are known for their durability and require less repair than gas vehicles. They are known to outlast gas vehicles and are more cost-effective over time.

Will you pay more for diesel fuel injectors? Yes, you will, but in the long run, those minor inconveniences don’t detract from the overall advantages.
