RV batteries are an investment, and like any component, they have a limited lifespan. By following a few simple maintenance practices, you can help extend your batteries’ service life, improve their performance, and get the most value from your investment.
Why Is My Battery Dead?
Irregular charging is one of the biggest culprits of early battery breakdown. Once you start using your battery, tiny sulfuric acid crystals attach to the plates. This is normal and expected, and when the battery is regularly charged, the crystals convert back to active material. Problems begin when charging is irregular, which creates the ideal conditions for sulfation, which reduces battery capacity.
Another common source of battery drain is the electronic components (inverter, refrigerator, propane and CO detectors, entertainment devices, Wi-Fi hotspot, etc.) that are connected to your battery, which can drain it. This can occur even when you’re not using them. Again, with regular battery charges, the “parasitic load” becomes a non-issue.
If you live in an area that gets extremely hot summers or bitterly cold winters, your battery’s lifespan will be compromised. Excessive heat accelerates chemical reactions, whereas extreme cold freezes the electrolytes in your battery, causing them to expand and potentially rupture the cells or crack the casing.
While you’re going through your RV maintenance checklist, include the battery charger, because a faulty one can lead to overcharging, which is another reason a battery will not reach its maximum lifespan.
Extending Battery Life
The most common batteries used in RVs today are the flooded lead-acid variety. They require a bit more TLC than their more expensive counterparts, lithium batteries. To extend their service life, keep the batteries fully charged during storage and never discharge them below 50 percent. Keep an eye on the electrolyte level and only add distilled water when the levels are low.Lithium batteries do not need to be replaced as often as flooded lead-acid batteries, and you’re paying for that extra lifespan up front. Regular RV maintenance tips for lithium batteries include storing them in a cool, dry place when they are not being used. Always use a lithium-specific charger to avoid overcharging them, and check the connections regularly to ensure corrosion does not set in.
What’s the Lifespan?
Your lead-acid battery will last between three and six years, depending on the brand and the conditions in which it is used and cared for. But there are some caveats. For example, if you invest in an absorbent glass mat (AGM) battery, you can expect 500 to 800 charging cycles, which for most RV owners is six to 10 years.
The gel batteries, which are also lead-acid models, have silica mixed in with the electrolyte, which creates a more stable environment. They last around 10 years, or 500 to 1,000 charging cycles.
Lithium batteries, while the most expensive option, are lighter, discharge more slowly and require little to no maintenance. These have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years.
