As winter sets in with its freezing temperatures and harsh conditions, you face a unique set of challenges in protecting your RV when you store it for the winter. But with a proactive winter maintenance plan you can keep your RV in top shape and ready to hit the road when the weather warms up. Here are some things you need to consider:
The RV Battery
Some batteries do better than others in cold weather, but no battery is impervious to the brutal cold. If your RV is in storage, it’s important that you disconnect your battery during the winter and bring it indoors where it is warm. And if your RV is stored for months, connect a maintenance charger to it, which will prevent it from dying.
Take this time to inspect the battery terminals, as they can become corroded. There are many effective treatments for clearing the corrosion, including white vinegar or lemon juice and water solutions, a damp cloth or brush. Isopropyl alcohol is also an efficient agent for ridding your terminals of corrosion.
Water Systems
The water tank on your RV needs to be drained and all water lines should be clear of water because freezing temperatures will cause moisture to expand and cause major damage if water is left in your tank.
All water tanks, including your fresh water, gray water and black water tanks need to be emptied for winter storage. If your RV has a water heater, empty it as well. Once all water systems in your RV have been drained, add RV antifreeze to the pipes and water lines. This pushes out existing water that wouldn’t fully drain.
Rodent Prevention
During the winter months, rodents seek shelter, and an attractive target is the engine block of an RV, as well as the interior. With more plant-based, biodegradable engine parts coming on the market, more rodent damage has been reported. To prevent your RV diesel engine from becoming bait, don’t park near food sources or fields. The ideal place to store your RV would be a sealed garage where rodents are less likely to gain entry.
If you park in a garage, be sure to check entry points, such as gaps or open windows. Furthermore, don’t make your garage attractive by storing feed, pet food or piles of old magazines, newspapers or cardboard, all of which rodents flock to.
