RV Maintenance: Tips for Air Conditioning and Cooling Systems

Sweating it out in a hot RV is nobody’s definition of a good vacation. As you plan your summer adventures, be sure to make RV maintenance one of the top items on your to-do list because you’ll want your cooling system in shape.

Some maintenance and repair is best left to professionals, but this checklist should be a helpful guide that just about any RV owner can handle:

  • Inspect the Air Ducts
Blockage, leaks and debris can all cause headaches, so take a look at your air ducts to ensure they are clean and able to maintain optimal airflow.
  • Check Condenser Coils
Dirt and debris can also build up on evaporator and condenser coils, so be sure to clean them off frequently so they can properly exchange heat and efficiently cool your RV.
  • Clean the AC Cover
Yes, the cover is there for aesthetic reasons, but it also protects your AC system from sucking in dirt and debris, so be sure to look carefully at the cover and clean it frequently.
  • Fix the Fins
What are fins? When you take off the cover of your AC unit, you’ll see a series of metal fins that play a crucial role in the heat exchange process. They can become bent over time, so take a moment to inspect the fins and gently bend them back into shape. Also, use a mild soap solution and clean them off so they’ll perform more efficiently.
  • Wash the Filters
Another air-clearing device in AC units is the filters, which can become caked in fine dust and need to be washed. If your filter is looking a bit haggard, replace it.

Another tip outside of maintenance involves the actual use of your RV because there are ways to keep it cool without utilizing your cooling system. For example, open the windows at night when the temps dip, but keep the windows and blinds shut during the day to keep the sun and heat out.

You might also find that your RV will have pockets of trapped heat, which can be circulated out with the help of a portable fan. Also, to prevent these pockets from occurring, try to park in the shade and do your cooking outdoors when possible.
